Balanced Rock

Standing atop the rhyolite cliffs along a scenic highway in Castleford, Idaho, this natural rock formation defies the laws of physics with its astounding measurements of 48 feet high, 40 feet wide and a pedestal  base just 37 X 17.5 inches wide.  Sitting unsettlingly 200 feet above the canyon floor, one wonders how this work of nature formed and how long it will remain up there.  Scientists believe Balanced Rock was created by wind, precipitation and regular seasonal weather changes over millions of years.  Steep trails to the top give a bird's eye view of the canyon below and opportunities for exploring the volcanic terrain around and behind the rocks.
